Winter pothole repairs completed

A MASSIVE backlog of repairs to potholes which opened up across York after the worst winter for more than 30 years has been cleared.

York Council confirmed yesterday that repairs to 8,000 potholes requiring urgent attention due to the severe winter weather had been completed.

The council announced in March that an extra 1m of taxpayers' cash was to be used to pay for road repairs across York.

Council chiefs also confirmed that they expected to spend nearly 900,000 on the winter maintenance programme for gritting, almost double the amount initially set aside.

Between January and April, the council received double the normal number of highway maintenance queries.

The Yorkshire Post revealed last month that extra teams of road repairers had been drafted in to deal with the damage the freeze caused to York's road network.

In some cases, the initial repairs were done on a temporary basis, and a council spokeswoman said the focus would shift to making the repairs more permanent.

Potholes can be reported to the council's Customer Contact Centre on 01904 551551.
