Woman, 60, dead in Bridlington Bay diving tragedy UPDATED

The victim of a fatal diving incident is from a Filey diving club, it emerged today.

The 59-year-old woman, who was a member of Filey Sub Aqua Association, was declared dead on arrival at hospital, after being airlifted from Bridlington Bay yesterday afternoon. She had been reported as unconscious, but breathing.

She was understood to be an experienced diver, diving from the club’s boat, at a depth of around 30 metres.

Her 54-year-old companion was taken to a hyperbaric unit in Hull as a precaution.

Humberside Police said they were preparing a report for the coroner and that the circumstances of her death were not suspicious.

A spokesman for the club declined to comment.

It is the third diving tragedy to hit the diving community in Filey in recent years.

Friends Malcolm Exley, a civil servant of Willow Garth, Newby and Stephen Bailey, of Plane Tree Way, Filey, died after diving a 160-ft deep wreck around eight miles off Filey Brigg in August 2009.

Both were fathers-of-two and members of the Filey Brigg Sub Aqua Club.
