Prosecutor David Gordon told Bradford Crown Court at the start of the the trial in March that Mr Shah had suffered life-threatening injuries but later recovered.

Mr Gordon said Mr Shah had lived at his home on Ringwood Road with his ailing mother and sister and they had had petty problems and annoyances for many years with members of the Nawaz family, who lived next door.

“Latterly there had been complaints made to Mr Shah over where his brother Wajid parked his burger van which he used for trade on the Canterbury estate,” said Mr Gordon.

The jury also found Nawaz’s mother Fazilat Nawaz guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after she joined in the attack by hitting the victim with a shoe.

Fazilat Nawaz told police officers during an interview that there had been a long-running dispute about the burger van being parked inconsiderately.

She was jailed for five years after Judge Peter Benson said it was impossible to avoid an immediate custodial sentence in her case despite her age, previous good character and health problems.

Judge Benson said the attack was motivated by an incident earlier in the day when the victim was alleged to have sworn at Nadeem Nawaz’s sister.
