George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin had a second opportunity to say “I do” when they celebrated a civil ceremony in a historic palace along Venice’s Grand Canal.

The couple tied the knot two days earlier in Venice in a private ceremony attended by celebrity friends and family. Yesterday, they followed up with a required civil procedure before Italian authorities.

The newlyweds arrived by water taxi, Clooney looking dapper in grey suit and matching tie, while the bride wore a cream short-sleeved jacket with palazzo trousers and a matching wide-brimmed hat.

They turned to wave at hundreds of people who had waited for hours for their arrival, before Clooney ushered his wife inside.

They emerged 20 minutes later with former Rome mayor Walter Veltroni, who performed both ceremonies.

On Sunday, wedding bands were glinting on the hands of the couple as they emerged from the luxury hotel in Venice where they were married a day earlier.

The bridegroom, in a smart light grey suit, sported a simple ring on his left hand.

His wife, in a flouncy white dress with pastel-coloured appliques, had a thin band studded with what appeared to be diamonds.

They hopped into a water taxi and, embracing, made their way down the Grand Canal.

Gondoliers steered out of the way while tourists cheered.

The 53-year-old actor, who had vowed he would never wed again, and the 36-year-old London-based human right lawyer were married with Hollywood stars and family among guests.

Clooney was previously married to Talia Balsam. They divorced in 1993.
