Worldwide Webb nets honour at home

FOOTBALL referee Howard Webb, whose officiating was tested to the limit during the ill-tempered 2010 World Cup Final, was given a far smoother ride when he picked up an honorary degree. Rotherham-born Webb was given the honorary doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University during a graduation ceremony in the city yesterday.

Webb, 40, who is a serving police officer with South Yorkshire Police, became an MBE in the New Year Honours.

He presided over last year’s final in South Africa which saw a record 13 yellow cards and one red card as Spain beat the Netherlands 1-0.
