Without the skill and energy of Yorkshire people, Britain would be a very different place. Government policy is decided, and challenged, by statesmen and women who are proud to call Yorkshire their home.

Yorkshire will be a key battleground in the next General Election, which means we’ll be hearing a lot more from the likes of Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Labour leader Ed Miliband and Foreign Secretary William Hague.

For centuries, York was England’s second city. today it is home to the charismatic Archbishop of York John Sentamu, who fled from persecution in his native Uganda to continue his theological studies in Britain. Pilgrims to York Minister are inspired by his oratory, and moved by his story.

Although Yorkshire is famous for its beautiful countryside, it cannot survive by becoming a museum. Entrepreneurs have brought employment and new technology to our rural communities.

One of Europe’s major ice cream companies, R&R, has established a large operation in North Yorkshire, where the climate is hardly tropical. Our list includes business people who have helped to create jobs and secure investment during the worst slump in living memory, by combining the hard-headed Yorkshire virtues of thrift and graft with a commitment to innovation.

Anyone who has studied the Bronte sisters’ novels will know that Yorkshire has deep-rooted links with the arts. Our list includes

household names such as David Hockney, Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ben Kingsley. An actor as gritty and versatile as Sean Bean could only have come from Yorkshire. However, if you peruse the list, it soon becomes clear that there is no single Yorkshire voice.

The county is the birthplace of such diverse performers as the singer Corinne Bailey Rae and the opinionated broadcaster Jeremy Clarkson.

The London Olympics launched Yorkshire sporting personalities on to the global stage. Nobody will forget the joy of boxer Nicola Adams and athlete Jessica Ennis-Hill as they clutched their gold medals.
