Youth activity groups get crime-fighting cash

MORE than 100 community groups which provide activities to cut nuisance crime and anti-social behaviour among young people are to get money from the county's Police Authority.

Grants totalling 190,100 have been awarded to 118 community projects throughout the South Yorkshire as part of the Authority's A Better Community (ABC) Awards.

The 2010 ABC Awards are designed to help local community and voluntary groups contribute towards improving confidence and satisfaction with South Yorkshire Police by offering activities for young people.

Anita Gelder, consultation and grants officer at South Yorkshire Police Authority which oversees the work of the force, said: "Once again the ABC Awards have proved a huge success.

"The 2010 grants have been awarded to some extremely deserving groups in order for them to continue their fantastic work and it will be great to see how they will make a difference to the local community."

In Barnsley, 20 community projects will receive a total of 32,000, including the Darton Youth Project, which will receive 1,100 to help to host activities during the summer holidays.

Grants totalling nearly 44,000 have been awarded to 28 community projects in Doncaster, with Clay Lane Youth Club in Wheatley receiving 2,000 to provide a variety of activities for young people every Friday evening.

In Rotherham, 24 community projects are set to be awarded grants of more than 39,000, such as the Dinnington and Anston Caf which will receive 1,880 to provide a cafe based drop-in facility.

Aspire Amateur Boxing Club, based at Darnall Education Centre, Darnall Road, Sheffield will receive 1,980.

The money will enable the club to extend its opening hours and allow more young people to get involved.

South Yorkshire Police Authority's ABC Awards has invested more than 1.7m in 2,400 projects since being launched in 2001.

All the projects receive grants up to a maximum of 2,000.
