Wakefield road closures: Seven locations affected by electrical and highway works

A series of road and footpath closures have been announced across Wakefield and Ossett, with electrical upgrades, road maintenance and reconstruction works among the reasons for the restrictions.

Drivers and pedestrians are being warned of temporary traffic restrictions affecting seven locations across the Wakefield district over the coming weeks.

Wakefield Council has announced a series of closures for electrical connections, road repairs, maintenance and footpath reconstruction, with some restrictions scheduled to remain in place until May 2027.

Among the upcoming closures is Boyne Drive in Wakefield, where approximately 85 metres of road will close from Wednesday (Oct 21) until Wednesday (Oct 28) for a new electricity connection and fuse upgrade.

Motorists will be diverted via Humley Road and Woodmoor Road, with access to affected premises maintained wherever possible.

Elsewhere, Wrenthorpe Bypass will close between 9.30am and 3.30pm on Wednesday (Oct 21) and Thursday (Oct 22) for litter picking, grass cutting, road sweeping, gully clearing and tree pruning.

Other restrictions announced by the council include:

  • Manygates Lane, Wakefield: A section between Duke of York Avenue and Manygates Avenue was scheduled to close between 8am and 4pm on Monday (Oct 19) for a bridge inspection. A diversion was arranged via Manygates Lane, Castle Road and Barnsley Road.
  • Spa Croft Road, Ossett: The road is due to close from Tuesday (Nov 3) until Wednesday (Nov 4) for road patching works. A diversion will operate via Spa Croft Road, Manor Road, South Parade and Junction Lane.
  • Junction Lane, Ossett: The road is also due to close from Tuesday (Nov 3) until Wednesday (Nov 4) for road patching works, with the same diversion route.
  • Clifford Avenue, Wakefield: Approximately 25 metres will close from Friday (Oct 30) until Thursday (Nov 5) for a new electrical connection and fuse upgrade. Motorists will be diverted via Duke of York Avenue and Warren Avenue.

A public footpath will also be affected, with Footpath 59 in Wakefield due to close from Monday (Nov 2) until Sunday (May 2), 2027.

The closure will affect the route from Wakefield Bridge towards the path from Fall Ings Road, allowing reconstruction works connected with an adjacent development to take place.

Pedestrians will be diverted via Doncaster Road and Fall Ings Road to the canal path.

The council said access to premises along affected roads will be maintained wherever possible.

The restrictions may be lifted earlier if the works are completed ahead of schedule.
