York road closures and cycle route shutdown confirmed for January works
Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians have been warned, as a series of road closures are set to take place across York this January.
Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are being urged to plan ahead as City of York Council prepares a series of temporary traffic restrictions to allow maintenance, utility and flood defence works to take place across the city.
The council has confirmed that parts of the road network and a key cycle route will be affected from early January, with some restrictions lasting into the summer.
Among the most significant measures is the continued closure of Clifton Ings National Cycle Network Route 65, which will remain shut to both cyclists and pedestrians from January 1 until June 30, 2026, while flood defence works are carried out.

A signed diversion will be in place.
A number of roads across York will also be closed on a temporary basis, including:
- Wetherby Road overnight on January 18–19 for telecoms works
- Charlton Street from January 19–23 for water works
- Aldborough Way on January 19–20 for highway maintenance
- York Road Level Crossing, Strensall, overnight on January 19–20 for railway works
- Shirbutt Lane, Hessay, from January 19 until February 6 for electrical works
- Manor Drive South on January 21
- Moor Lane, Skelton, on January 21–22
Access for residents and emergency services will be maintained wherever possible, and diversion routes will be signposted on affected roads.
City of York Council said the temporary orders are required to ensure works can be completed safely.
