Outlander to return for seasons 5 and 6

Outlander - the time-travelling, period-drama - looks set to have a bright future.

Based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling series of novels - which follow Claire Randall as she passes through some Scottish standing stones and is transported back to the 18th century - cable network Starz has announced that it will be returning for seasons five and six.

The renewal sees 24 episodes ordered over the course of the two seasons, meaning Outlander's fifth and sixth seasons will be the shortest in the show's history.

But fans have been assured that the two series - based on the fifth and sixth books in Gabaldon's series - will see "their beloved Claire and Jamie back facing new challenges, adversaries and adventures."

Expanded horizons

"In seasons five and six as we delve into American history," said Starz Ceo Chris Albrecht in a statement, "and continue the story of the Frasers as they settle in the New World."

It was also announced that Season 4, which is currently shooting in Scotland, will debut in America this November, so it stands to reasons we'll see it in the UK not long after.

Set in 1740s Scotland with the The Jacobite Rebellion flaring up around the two central characters, the show is filmed almost entirely on location.

Its Scottish links mean it has amassed a cult following on this side of the pond, and news of the show's continuation will no doubt excite fans greatly.
