The Edinburgh Flyer
Head north to the Scottish capital on board The Edinburgh Flyer on Saturdays, March 29, or May 17, and you can expect some fast running with an historic LMS Stanier Black 5 locomotive heading your train.
The East Coast Mainline offers great views as you steam through Durham with its majestic hilltop cathedral, cross the mighty Tyne at Newcastle, follow the beautiful Northumbrian Coast watching out for Bamburgh Castle and Lindisfarne Island and then steam over the 28-arch Royal Border Bridge into Scotland. More attractive scenery follows as you steam through the Scottish Borders.
The Edinburgh Flyer will take you into Edinburgh Waverley from where you can take a break to see the famous sights including the Royal Mile, Castle and Holyrood Palace. Alternatively, you might like to visit the city’s fine galleries and museums or shops before re-joining your steam train to sit back and relax as you head for home.
The Whitby Flyer
Take The Whitby Flyer on Saturday, March 19, again from York, and enjoy the scenery as you travel by steam through Thirsk and Northallerton and then follow the attractive Esk Valley through the northern section of the North York Moors.
Boatyards and views of the ancient Abbey will herald your arrival. The Whitby Flyer will certainly turn heads as it steams into Whitby. There is lots to explore in this fascinating historic seaside town. Why not wander around the working harbour, take a look at the jet shops and kipper smokery, fill up on fish and chips or head up the famous 199 steps to visit St Mary’s Church and the ancient abbey?
