Summer steam journeys: Where to find the best routes and save £20pp on rail adventures

The Waverley will head for Hellifield, where its steam locomotive will take on water before making one of the most staggering climbs on Britain’s railway network – a total of 15 miles mainly at a gradient of 1 in 100. You won’t want to miss it!
Watch out for the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct
Magnificent views across the fells to the Pennine Three Peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough are a prelude to the drama of the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct, crossing high above the valley floor and followed by a run through Blea Moor Tunnel.
Passing through beautiful Dent Dale, watch out for Dent station, England’s highest open station, before the tough ascent to Ais Gill Summit at 1,169 feet.
Explore ancient border city Carlisle
Descending to pretty Appleby, The Waverley will head for Carlisle – where you will have a break of about two hours to explore this ancient border city, with its castle, cathedral, museum, shops and cafes, before rejoining the train for a return journey along the world-famous Settle & Carlisle Line.
Treat yourself – dine on board
