The Esk Valley and Whitby

This memorable day out will take you over one of Britain’s most scenic railway routes to Whitby. From joining stations Skipton, Leeds and York, on Friday, October 9, 'The Esk Valley’ will travel along the Esk Valley Line. Renowned for its rural charm, the line passes through picturesque countryside and the pretty villages of Grosmont, Sleights and Ruswarp on its way to the coast.

A stop at Whitby will provide chance to stretch your legs and take in the sea air perhaps around the bustling harbour, along the charming narrow streets or with a climb up the famous 199 steps to St Mary’s Church and the abbey.

The Edinburgh Christmas Market

Get into the Christmas spirit with a festive day out on board The Edinburgh Christmas Market, which will run from York and Northallerton on Saturdays, November 21 and December 19.

This special train will set out from York diesel hauled to be met by a mighty steam loco at border city Carlisle. From there, the train will steam through the attractive landscapes of southern Scotland to the Scottish capital.

Arriving at Waverley station in the heart of Edinburgh, you can enjoy the atmosphere of the Christmas market in Princes Street gardens or explore attractions including the historic hilltop castle, the Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace or the city’s fine art galleries.
