Atzeni plans repeat show on Town Moor

Ante-post favourite Elm Park will face seven rivals in tomorrow’s Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster as jockey Andrea Atzeni looks for back-to-back wins in the final Group One race of the 2014 campaign.

Atzeni’s victory 12 months ago on subsequent Labrokes  St Leger winner Kingston Hill was the catalyst for a remarkable run of success that led to him being appointed as Qatar Racing’s retained rider in succession to Jamie Spencer.

Trained by Andrew Balding, Elm Park was third on his racecourse debut at Sandown at the end of July before racking up a hat-trick of victories, culminating in his impressive success in the Royal Lodge at Newmarket at the end of last month.

Meanwhile, Jacobean and Aloft will represent Aidan O’Brien as the Ballydoyle handler seeks his eighth win in this one-mile contest – the record is the late Sir Henry Cecil’s 10 victories.

As for today’s action on Town Moor, Hambleton trainer Bryan Smart will be hoping Red Pike can win the feature Racing Post Betting Shop Manager Handicap as Boroughbridge jockey Paul Mulrennan chases a century of winners – he is on the 91-winner mark.

It has been a difficult week for Smart and Mulrennan after it emerged that their star sprinter Moviesta, co-owned by Harry Redknapp and third to David O’Meara’s Move In Time in the Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp, is heading to the sales. The ownership partnership is being dissolved.

Megan Carberry, attached to Malton trainer Brian Ellison’s stable, is the winner of the 2014 Go Racing In Yorkshire Apprentice Series following the penultimate race at Catterick.
