Cautious Carnegie won't be taking any chances

Bryan Redpath’s promotion-chasing side won 34-16 in their semi-final first-leg at Ealing Trailfinders on Friday.

That means they take a sizeable 18-point lead into the return leg at Headingley this Friday and are big favourites to reaching the final where leaders London Irish will be their likely opponents.

But No 8 Burrows, who scored one of their four tries, insisted: “We are not getting carried away.

“This is just half-time in the tie and we can not turn up next week and expect to win.

“We will come in on Monday and make sure we come out all guns blazing next Friday at Headingley Carnegie.

“They are going to throw it around chasing those 18 points; we will have to expect the unexpected and make sure that we stick to our discipline and processes to handle that.”

Carnegie were warned of Ealing’s potential when Chris Elder was forced into a fine last-ditch tackle on Phil Chesters in the second period on Friday.

“It was one of those situations when you have to just throw everything at the tackle and I managed to get my shoulder into him,” recalled the former London Welsh full-back.

“I was relieved to see the touch judge put his flag up. Pete Lucock’s save at the end and Ryan Burrow’s try was massive and it can give us confidence going into next week with that 18-point lead.

“We have to be careful because we know they will come out and play with nothing to lose.

“They have got some pacy runners who can create gaps and we have to make sure we stay calm and use our heads to play smart in defence if we are to get into this Championship final.”
