Clancy thanks Sheffield veteran Elliott after winning Beverley title

BARNSLEY-born Ed Clancy secured the National Elite Criterium Championship crown with a blistering turn of speed in the sprint for the line in Friday night's title race in Beverley, East Yorkshire.

Clancy, the 25-year-old Olympic and World track champion, outsprinted Endura Racing rival Ian Wilkinson, from Lancashire, while Clancy's team-mate at the Motorpoint-Marshalls Pasta team, Jonny McEvoy was third.

After stepping from the podium, the newly-crowned champion was quick to thank his team-mates, especially the experienced Malcolm Elliott, from Sheffield.

"In the last 10 laps, I followed Malcolm like a loyal dog and you can see how much experience he has," said Clancy.

"He made my life so easy and I owe this win to Malcolm really. There was a lot of pressure and he's a guy we all look up to in the team and I didn't want to let the team down, but especially Malcolm."

The race looked to be heading for a very different finish, with a group of four riders breaking away and staying clear for two-thirds of the race. But they were caught on the final lap after one of the riders crashed, leaving Clancy with his chance.

The Championship was part of a big weekend of cycling in Beverley, which culminated in the East Yorkshire Classic, a

98-mile road race which forms part of the British Cycling Premier Calendar Series.

But there was little joy for Yorkshire riders in yesterday's race.

Derbyshire-based David Clarke (Pendragon) secured victory by just one second from Clancy's team-mate Ian Bibby, while Marcin Bialoblocki of the Wilier team was third.

The best Yorkshire rider was former Premier Calendar winner John Tanner, the Sportscover rider from Doncaster, who finished sixth. Clarke's day had begun badly when he suffered a puncture.
