All-round star Sadler leads Ossett challenge

OPENER Kristian Ward hit an unbeaten 121 as Townville inflicted a first league defeat of the season on Premiership champions Methley.

Ward guided Townville to 222-6 and Anurag Verma (4-31) and Joe Finnigan (2-38) limited leaders Methley’s reply to 154-8, which included a half-century by Richard Foster.

Ossett maintained their challenge when former Yorkshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire all-rounder John Sadler (43no and 4-25) led them to a nine-wicket win against Mirfield Parish Cavaliers.

Matthew Jordan’s unbeaten 62 guided Wakefield Thornes to a five-wicket victory at Altofts, who were routed for 106 by Ravinda Paliyaguruge (4-39), Faisal Irfan (3-25) and Matthew Varley (2-39).

Eric Austin smashed five sixes and 14 fours in a rapid century and Nick Kaye hit 60 as Birstall piled up 235-7 in a 40-over match at Buttershaw St Paul’s, whose reply fell 36 runs short, despite James Robson’s 93 and Paul Carroll’s 40.

Daniel Wilbor (51) and Patrick Hinchliffe (4-4) gave Carlton the edge at Batley.

Tariq Hussain (4-24) and Muhammed Shahnawaz (3-47) bowled out Carlton for 135.

Batley looked to be coasting to victory when Sardar Khan steered them to 95-3 but they fell for 110 after losing their last seven wickets for just 15 runs.

Will Stiff’s 6-34 was in vain for Hunslet Nelson in a 34-over match at Wrenthorpe. Stiff and Robert Barker (2-19) toppled Wrenthorpe for 122 but James Glynn (3-27), Chris Leaf (2-24), Jordan Sleightholme (2-13) and Jack Rich (2-43) kept Hunslet to 110-9.

Nick Downward (67no), Alex Leyshon (3-25) and Mark Atkinson (3-10) steered Wakefield St Michael’s to their first Championship win at Hopton Mills.
