Anthony McGrath: Yorkshire growth is there for all to see

ANTHONY MCGRATH said “the growth’s there for all to see” after his Yorkshire side hammered Somerset at Headingley.

Yorkshire completed the double over the County Championship leaders, who have now slipped to second place, 11 points behind Warwickshire with one round remaining.

“It was a really good performance against a very good team,” said McGrath, the Yorkshire head coach.

“You can see the belief in the players is now really starting to come through.

“This win isn’t going to count towards anything this year in terms of silverware for us, but I think the growth’s there for all to see.

“I think anyone watching this team now can see the capabilities, and it’s about how far we can take it now.”

Yorkshire won by 185 runs, blowing Somerset away on the fourth day after they resumed on 73-3 in pursuit of 287.

Ben Cliff completed an 11-wicket match haul as Somerset were dismissed for just 101.

“I thought the way we bowled was incredible,” McGrath added.

“The last seven wickets for 20-odd runs – it was a fantastic performance.

“The way we fought throughout was very impressive.

“Maybe this time last year, or earlier in the season, we’d have folded a couple of times in situations like that, but I think it just shows the growth of the team, the resilience and the togetherness.

"To beat a good team like that – and by that distance – is really pleasing.”

On Cliff, the 23-year-old pace bowler, McGrath said: “I’m delighted for him.

"He works really hard and, again, you could just see the confidence and belief as he ran in to bowl.

“He’s got pace, he’s got the ability to move the ball as well, and to get an 11-fer in any first-class game is a great effort, particularly when you win, and I know how much that meant to him.

“I think he’s going to be a real asset to us. He’s done some great work with our bowling coach, Mick Lewis, and this will obviously give him a lot of confidence.

“It’s about us reminding him that this is just the start.”

Yorkshire, who are fifth in Division One, play their final match of the season against third-placed Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge from Thursday.
