Brown's 269 helps Burley create new boundaries

Brown included 24 sixes in racing to a record 269, achieved in 119 balls.

He shared century stands with Nicky Bulcock (49), Jason Wright (45) and Red Bolton (70) as Burley made a record 499-8 off their 45 overs – a record total for the club.

To compound Leeds Modernians’ misery, they were then skittled out for 74 with James Frost taking six wickets.

Even then the new records were not over, as 573 was the highest aggregate score of both innings, and the highest winning margin of 425 runs.

Elsewhere, Alasdair Fearns (55) and Ewan McNab (48) starred as league newcomers St Chads Broomfield pulled off a shock win, passing Kirkstall’s 223 total with three wickets to spare.

And there was more giant-killing as Paul Quinlan followed up a top score of 35 with a 3-24 spell to help Third Division Harden knock out First Division Guiseley.

Third Division Bardsey caused an upset when Andy Bowes (52), Henry Wainman (83no) and Eddie Clayton (26no) steered them past Division Two Skipton’s 182-9 total.

A 5-26 spell from Will Lennard helped restrict Adel to 238-9 with Jan Mooliman (68) and Andy Laws (54) top scoring. Jibrael Malik (74) led the reply and Ilkley got home by three wickets with six balls to spare.

A spirited tail-end effort saw Whitley Hall recover from 95-7 to pass Morley’s 193 with two wickets in hand in the Heavy Woollen Cup.

Callium Bethel led the charge with a half century and he was well supported by Richard Wilkinson (19no) and Pieter Swanepoel (21no).

Gary Fellows (97) led the way as Hanging Heaton eased past Moorlands 192 in which Chris Stott hit an unbeaten 46. Sam Frankland (70) and Liam Collins (60) were the main contributors to Woodlands 301-8 before Kez Ahmed produced a 5-17 spell as Mirfield PC were skittled out for 89.

Dale Steyn is set to miss all of South Africa’s summer tour to England after the paceman admitted his recovery from shoulder surgery is taking longer than expected.

Steyn has not played since breaking a bone in his right shoulder in the first Test against Australia in November and had already been left out of South Africa’s Champions Trophy squad.

He had, though, been named in the South Africa A squad to tour the United Kingdom in May and June, but will now miss out.
