Collegiate duo Guy and Waterson shine

SHEFFIELD Collegiate batsmen Simon Guy and Jake Waterson took their combined runs total to 571 from their last four league outings as winless Rotherham Town were beaten by 162 runs at Abbeydale Park.

Guy’s last four innings have read 101, 25 not out, 80 not out and 79, while Waterson has strung together scores of 71, 89 not out, 52 and 74. They had a third-wicket partnership of 143 to lay a firm foundation for victory on Saturday, Guy finishing with 79 containing seven fours and Waterson making 74 including five boundaries.

Rotherham captain Nathan Smith took three wickets and then made 29 but his efforts were in vain, Oliver Pearson taking 4-15 in 9.2 overs as Town were dismissed for 83 in the 34th over.

Cleethorpes medium-pacer Ian Hallam had a shock call-up for his Yorkshire League debut against Appleby Frodingham when Andy Ellis had to drop out after injuring himself in the warm-up. Hallam responded with impressive figures of 10 overs, 5-43, as his side won by 61 runs.

After winning the toss, Appleby Frodingham elected to field and soon removed the normally prolific Bill Kirby, who already has two centuries to his name this season, but captain Alex Osmond and Graham Hume added 55 for the fifth-wicket, Osmond going on to make 62 off 73 balls, his half-century arriving in 55 balls. His innings contained five fours and three sixes.

Duncan Heath and Kieran Watson got Appleby Frodingham off to a steady start with a stand of 52 but Osmond (4-35) and Hallam then turned the game Cleethorpes’ way and the Steelmen were bowled out for 140 in 33.2 overs.

An opening partnership of 108 between Gareth Cox and Simon Widdup helped Doncaster Town to an incomplete win over visitors Hull, for whom openers Tim Appleyard and Peter Shally had a stand of 98. Driffield Town also had an incomplete win against Sheffield United, Sam Drury making 77 and all-rounder Nick Hardgrave hitting a quickfire 38 not out and taking 4-39.

The matches at Castleford, Scarborough and York were washed out.

Silent tribute held for tragic Norton victim

Players and supporters at the Whiston v Norton Oakes match in the Premier Division observed a minute’s silence before the game to remember the death in a recent road accident of 19-year-old Dominic Sayles, son of Norton secretary Martin Sayles.

Understandably, Norton were hardly in top form, and fell for 118 after being 85-4 at one stage, Andy Ivill claiming 4-36 for Whiston, who went on to win by six wickets as Andy Tomlinson took 4-21.

Elsecar started badly against visitors Aston Hall, being in trouble at 48-4, but were rallied to 209-8 by Shahzad Rana (70) and Glenn Yates (52) as Juan Grobbelaar took 4-26. Aston went close, finishing on189-8, Yates completing a good day’s work with a 4-43 return.

Champions Treeton had a nine-wicket win over Coal Aston, who came in at 161-9, with three wickets each for Steve Foster and Greg Norton. Foster carried his bat for 70, in a 130-run partnership with Gareth Davis (56), each hitting 11 boundaries.

Hallam made the trip to Wath pay off with a seven-wicket triumph, the hosts collapsing for 141 after getting off to a good start at 82-1, Derek Mitchell striking 41. The damage was done by Joe Cooper (7-30) before Nick Dymock (104) went on to hit the only century in the top flight, including nine boundaries. Wath used seven bowlers but failed to prevent Hallam reaching 142-3.

Steve Bethel made 38 but Wickersley were held at 144 with three wickets each for Ryan Tingle, Rob Oxberry and Sumit Puri. Upper Haugh, however, were skittled for the league’s lowest total to date, 21, which included seven ducks, Muhammad Naveed grabbing 6-10 and Lesroy Weekes 4-10.

Conisbrough’s Division One team hammered Bradfield for 323-5, opener Jeff Hemming blasting 173 with 27 boundaries, Gary Strephan adding 58 and Jon Phillips 48, before Bradfield were sent back for 186, Craig Hockenhull making 50 and Stuart Bellwood taking 8-40.

Whitley Hall B’s Matt Milburn made 113 in their 207-9 against Doncaster Town B (158-8).

Six-hit Khan helps North Leeds rally

While the rain meant almost half the matches were off, those that did go ahead produced some outstanding performances.

Pick of the bunch was in Division Two at North Leeds where Bolton Villas found themselves defending 115-7 in a match reduced to 35 overs per side.

Sam Lawrence lifted their spirits with a spell of 5-44 that had the home side reeling at 54-6 but then Jack Burke (30no) was joined by Parvez Khan, who smashed an unbeaten 52 off 20 balls, including seven fours and three sixes, the last of which clinched the match.

Knaresborough took full advantage of leaders Adel being washed out to take over top spot with a win over third-placed Rawdon.

Paul Malkin (51no) and Andrew Doidge (44) helped Rawdon to 163-5 but Stuart Carey (48) and Jonathan Tattersall (93no) gave the hosts a 122 opening stand. James Doidge rattled nerves with three quick wickets, but Tattersall saw Knaresborough home.

Calverley looked in with a chance of a first win when Ben Waller (5-22) helped dismiss Colton for 165. Alastair Long (45) gave the visitors hope but their last five wickets tumbled for the addition of seven runs.

Division One leaders Beckwithshaw were struggling at 29-3 in reply to Kirkstall’s 124, in which Istikhar Hussain picked up 5-40. But then Yasar Ali (88no) and Alex Lilley (28no) clinched victory with an unbroken stand of 110.

James Emmott took 6-37 as Pool were restricted to 146-9 and Ben Hillard (55) and Neil Spragg (43) steered Steeton to a third successive win.

Champions Collingham dropped into the bottom four with defeat by Burley. Neil Davies (4-41) restricted them to 142-9, a total Burley raced past thanks to a century stand from David Brook (89) and his brother Nick (51).

Roshan Livera scored 58 in 56 balls in Harden’s 125-9 but Bilton recovered from a mid-innings slump to take the points thanks to Chris Winn (25no).

Sam Smith (40), Stewart Smith (58) and Andrew Rhodes (43) saw Otley to 187-6 but they had to settle for four points when Jim Pickles (56no) squeezed Follifoot past the target for two points.
