After play got under way at 2.30pm following heavy rain, the visitors reduced Warwickshire to 64-5 at tea, making the most of helpful bowling conditions after winning the toss.

Varun Chopra - back from England Lions duty - was first to fall with the total on 12, well caught by Adam Lyth at second slip off Ryan Sidebottom for four.

Chopra drove firmly at the former England pace man and Lyth claimed a fast chance in front of his face at the second attempt.

The home side lifted the score to 42 before they were rocked by a fine burst from Liam Plunkett, who claimed 3-0 in 18 balls.

Will Porterfield was spectacularly caught by Rich Pyrah, diving to his left at point, for 14 before Darren Maddy was lbw for a duck propping forward.

Plunkett then had former England wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose caught low down at second slip by Lyth for a duck.

When Steve Patterson knocked out Chris Woakes’s middle stump, as another returning England Lions man managed just a single, Warwickshire were 55-5 in the 27th over.

Jim Troughton (28) and Rikki Clarke (eight) are unbeaten at the break, but both have had some uncomfortable moments.
