The all-rounder, aged 25, secured the sixth Championship century of his career, and has now secured back-to-back tons twice having done it against Hampshire and Lancashire in August of 2009.

His innings, including 12 fours and a slog-swept six off the spin of New Zealander Jeetan Patel, underpinned Yorkshire’s imposing first-innings total of 407 in reply to the champions’ 128, a lead of 279.

Yorkshire’s first innings, which resumed this morning on 318-7, concluded half an hour before lunch, with Patel completing figures of 5-56 from 24 overs thanks to the scalps of Ryan Sidebottom and Steve Patterson, who he trapped lbw and had caught at deep mid-wicket respectively.

Liam Plunkett had earlier been strangled down the leg-side off Chris Wright.

Then it was all over to Yorkshire’s bowlers, who were excellent as they bowled the hosts out for 140 inside 49 overs of their second innings.

Tim Bresnan finished with 3-41 from 13.2 overs, Sidebottom 3-23 from 14 and Patterson 3-19 from eleven. Yorkshire claimed 23 points.

Bresnan struck with the first ball of the innings when he trapped Varun Chopra lbw before getting Darren Maddy caught at second slip by Adam Lyth the last ball before lunch. Sandwiched in between, Sidebottom trapped Will Porterfield lbw as the Bears slipped to 9-3.

Home captain Jim Troughton, the toughest Bears nut to crack, and Tim Ambrose steadied the ship with a stand of 31 for the fourth wicket before the latter was caught at second slip by Lyth off Sidebottom. It was Lyth’s fifth catch of the match.

And when Patterson ripped out Chris Woakes’s middle stump with a big in-swinger, Warwickshire were 63-5 after 25 overs.

Troughton also fell lbw to Sidebottom for 37, as did Rikki Clarke to Patterson to leave the score at 89-7 in the 35th.

Patterson then had Jeetan Patel caught at short extra cover by Plunkett in the penultimate over before tea, leaving the score at 99-8. It was soon 112-9 when Plunkett picked up his first of the innings by bowling Wright and gaining revenge for the dismissal earlier in the day.

Bresnan then wrapped up the win when he had Tom Milnes caught behind by Andrew Hodd shortly after 5pm.
