Harrogate secure third-place finish

A FINE innings from Callum How helped Harrogate secure a third-place finish as they enjoyed a comprehensive eight-wicket success over Barnsley at St George’s Road.

Replying, Gate produced a confident 144-2, with in-form How sharing in a rewarding first-wicket partnership worth 94 with Alexis Twigg (44).

Earlier, paceman Graeme Whiles proved a thorn with the ball against his old club, taking 3-30 in 11 overs as Barnsley were dismissed for 142. Off-spinner George Ross (3-21) also had a good day.

York skipper Daniel Woods almost cleaned up with the ball for the second time this season, with the spinner agonisingly failing to follow up his ten-for earlier this season against Castleford in taking nine wickets for the champions in their 105-run success over Appleby Frodingham. The Lincolnshire outfit were skittled for just 109, with Woods’ recording sublime figures of 9-38 in just over 15 overs for York, who had earlier finished on 214-9.

The prolific wicket-taker needs six wicket in York’s final match of the season against visiting Sheffield Collegiate this coming Saturday to beat the league record of 90 wickets in a season set back in 1999.

Yorkshire’s Jack Leaning (73) top-scored for York, whose hopes of a league and cup double ended on Sunday when they went down in the League Cup final to Driffield.

Lowly Castleford were dismissed for 99 in their 82-run reverse at Sheffield Collegiate.

The South Yorkshiremen had opened with 181 before their captain Matthew Dixon took centre stage, taking 5-28.

Mosun Hussain (42no) and Will Rhodes (33no) saw second-placed Yorkshire Academy (142-2) home, enjoying an unbroken stand of 67 in their side’s eight-wicket win over Doncaster Town (141), Azeem Rafiq taking 4-52.

Scarborough bowler Jack Holt, 18, who will head over to Australia to play for a side in Melbourne shortly, should be fit for Scarborough’s final clash of the season this weekend.

He missed the five-wicket win over Sheffield United, which saw Adam Lyth hit 62.
