Let's get a move on says Yorkshire CCC head coach Anthony McGrath

ANTHONY MCGRATH wants Yorkshire to get a shift on - to stop them being docked crucial Championship points.

The Yorkshire head coach was unhappy that his team lost one point for a slow over-rate in their last match against Warwickshire at Headingley.

Yorkshire took just two points from the fixture after losing one of their bowling bonus points in the five-wicket defeat.

The problem was exacerbated by the fact that there was not a single over of spin in the game on a heavily-grassed pitch, but McGrath does not believe that could be used as an excuse.

As Yorkshire prepared to return to action against his former club Essex in Chelmsford on Friday, McGrath said: “It’s frustrating. We've obviously changed tactics a little bit this year, and playing the five seamers where we can, so we've got to manage that (the over-rate).

“There's no excuse.

"Every point counts, whether you're at the top or the bottom, so it's something we need to manage better.

“It's not an excuse that an over of spin wasn’t bowled in the last match because Warwickshire didn't bowl any spin either.

“It's frustrating, but hopefully we can pick that up going forward.”

McGrath believes one of his seamers in that game, Jordan Buckingham, will be better for the run out having gone straight into the fixture after arriving from Australia.

The overseas pace bowler, who is with the club until the end of the month, had a disappointing time of it, returning figures of 11-0-84-1 in the first innings and 3-0-21-1 in the second.

“It's always difficult,” said McGrath.

“You're seeing it through the counties now, where players come in for that month or so.

“He's come off a bit of a break in Australia, even though he's bowled while he's been there, and we've been managing his prep.

“Getting off a plane and coming into these conditions, that can happen (an underwhelming performance).

“He's obviously as disappointed as anyone, but we saw with Ben (Sears) a similar thing at Durham, and hopefully he will be ready for the next game.”

Sears, the 27-year-old New Zealand pace bowler, performed well against Warwickshire, taking match figures of 6-98, having returned 1-74 from 16 overs at Durham when he, too, had only just arrived.

He is not involved this week but Buckingham keeps his place in a 14-strong squad from which England’s Joe Root and Harry Brook exit stage left having been made available for one game only ahead of the Test summer.

Root scored 1 and 90 against Warwickshire, and Brook 33 and 20, and McGrath said: “Joe played really well, and it was difficult for them both.

"We know that they're world-class players, but you can practise as much as you want, but it does take a bit of time to get your rhythm in the middle, but Joe was superb in that second innings.

“It wasn't easy for batting, particularly the first day into the second day, but he kind of held the innings together and gave us a fighting chance there.”
