MP fears Yorkshire Cricket Museum at Headingley has been mothballed

Headingley is set to host four women’s world cup matches, as well as the England men’s team’s test match against Pakistan.

Concerns have been raised by Yorkshire County Cricket Club members that Headingley Stadium’s museum is being mothballed ahead of a busy summer.

Headingley is set to host four women’s world cup matches, as well as the England men’s team’s test match against Pakistan.

However, at county games so far this season, the Yorkshire Cricket Museum, situated under the East Stand, has remained closed.

Leeds Central and Headingley MP Alex Sobel is poised to write to the county, asking when the museum is set to reopen.

He said: “It's extremely disappointing that the museum appears to have been mothballed and that fans have been left in the dark about if and when it will reopen.

“Supporters are missing out on the chance to delve into the rich history of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

“So many people associated with the club put immense effort into making fascinating memorabilia available to view for all those coming through the Headingley gates on matchdays.

“For more than 15 years cricket lovers have been able to relive the iconic events of the club's history and get a greater insight into legends of the game.

“I'm appealing to officials at the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation who are responsible for the museum to do all in their power to get this terrific attraction reopened as soon as possible.

“Those attending Headingley for the women's 20/20 world cup games, the men's test match and one day international match, as well as other fixtures, must not be denied the chance to visit the museum this summer."

The museum contains artefacts from throughout Yorkshire’s glorious history, as well as from test matches at Headingley.

It is run by Yorkshire CCC’s charitable arm, the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation, and has previously been operated by volunteers.

Yorkshire CCC did not respond to requests for comment.
