Rams’ boss Morrison helps out Northowram

DEWSBURY Rams rugby league head coach Glenn Morrison helped keep alive Northowram Fields’ chances of avoiding relegation from the Premier Division.

The 37-year-old former Bradford Bulls and Wakefield Wildcats Australian second row forward claimed four wickets as bottom side Northowram beat Mirfield Parish Cavaliers by six wickets in a 38-over match.

Zafar Khan (4-17) and Morrison (4-74) limited Cavaliers to 179-9 which included an unbeaten 67 by Neil Parkinson.

Robert Larner (67no) and Jeremy Smith (33) shared an opening 62-run stand as Northowram knocked off the runs in 33.3 overs.

Hunslet Nelson’s Derrick Hammill produced one of the top-flight’s best bowling performances in an eight-wicket win over lowly Batley.

Hammill (7-21) and Michael Lambert (3-42) sent Batley collapsing from 44-2 to 68 all out, despite Ayaz Seedat’s battling 36.

An unbroken 82-run stand between Mathew Jordan (59no) and David Toft (37no) guided Wakefield Thornes to a nine-wicket win as Wrenthorpe were routed for 105 by Scott Wightman (6-32) and Matthew Varley (2-17).

Premier Division title favourites Townville were in a strong position against Birstall when the game was abandoned.

Ritchie Bresnan (4-26), Kyllin Vardhan (3-27) and Jack Hughes (2-13) skittled Birstall for 119.

Openers Tim Walton (20no) and Jonny Booth (13no) gave Townville’s reply a great start by scoring 33 runs off four overs before the weather intervened.

Townville stayed 16 points clear of Methley whose game against Carlton was also hit by rain.

Richard Foster (71) and John Rickers (37) steered Methley to 206 before the rain came.

Ossett were cursing their luck when they were foiled by rain in a 39-over game against Altofts, who were kept at 127-9 by Khalid Usman (3-29) and Charles Orme (3-18).

In reply, Ossett looked set for victory when Javid Umarji (31no) led them to 96-3 from their 21 overs.
