Snell and Kay rip through Academy

THE rapid re-match between second-placed Yorkshire Academy and leaders York saw batsmen on both sides struggle, but York again came out on top.

The teams had met six days earlier in the League Cup semi-final when York won by three runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method. This time the match reached a quick conclusion.

Duncan Snell’s 10.2 overs brought him impressive figures of 6-32 as the Academy were sent back for 65 in 20.2 overs, 13 extras being the highest ‘scorer’. Two of Nick Kay’s three overs were maidens and he took two wickets for four runs. York should have cruised to victory but lost seven wickets before reaching their objective after 22 overs.

Appleby Frodingham were dismissed for 81, their lowest league score of the season, in 34.4 overs. Graham Hume, Cleethorpes’ South African fast-medium raider, did the damage, taking 6-26. Cleethorpes won by seven wickets in the 19th over.

Hull’s four-match victory charge came to a halt at home to Doncaster, who won by six wickets with Simon Widdup in top form withfive wickets and an unbeaten 95, sharing an opening stand of 124 with Gareth Cox, who made 81. Hull had half-century makers in David Barrick, Tom Dimaline and Tim Appleyard.

Scarborough bounced back from their League Cup semi-final knock-out by Driffield with a 72-run victory at Harrogate. Darren Harland amassed 13 boundaries in an innings of 113, sharing an opening stand of 183 with captain Andy Simpson, who made 76.

Alex Patmore, playing his first game since returning to Sheffield Collegiate from Japan, where he has been teaching, hit a half-century but his side lost by eight wickets at Rotherham. Openers James Moorhouse and Gareth Purshouse had a partnership of 112 for the winners.

Sheffield United lost their last eight wickets for 30 runs and lost by six wickets to Driffield, while Barnsley had a nine-wicket home success against Castleford, Matt Wilson and Steve Nuttall enjoying an unbroken second-wicket stand of 78. Castleford recovered from 80-7 to 164 all out.
