Yorkshire CCC rising star Jafer Chohan pinching himself after England call-up

JAFER CHOHAN is in dreamland after being picked for England’s white-ball tour to the West Indies.

The Yorkshire leg-spinner has earned his first call-up and will take his place in a 14-man squad alongside his fellow Yorkshire wrist-spinner Adil Rashid.

“It feels like an absolute dream to be selected,” said Chohan, who signed a new three-year deal with Yorkshire on Tuesday. “It’s what I’ve worked for my whole life.

“I’ve had a great week – having it announced about another three years at Yorkshire, as well as having a call-up now with England.

“For me, this is a really good opportunity to be around some of the best players in the world, learn as much as I can and just really sharpen up my game as much as possible.”

Chohan, 22, is the most striking selection in a squad that includes two other uncapped players in John Turner and Dan Mousley, both of whom were in squads for the recent games against Australia. Chohan – the first graduate of the South Asian Cricket Academy (SACA) to be picked in an England men’s squad – has played 23 times for Yorkshire in the T20 Blast, taking 22 wickets at an average of 23.18, but no first-class or one-day cricket to date.

England play three one-day internationals against the West Indies in Antigua on October 31 and November 2, and in Barbados on November 6, followed by five T20 internationals in Barbados on November 9 and November 10, and in St Lucia on November 14, November 16 and November 17.

Chohan believes that his experience of being around England players at Yorkshire will help him thrive, saying: “Having big England names in the Yorkshire dressing room – it doesn’t get too much better than that in terms of helping me improve.

“It has helped at Yorkshire seeing how England players go about their work and how well they understand their games, and how well they know what works for them.

“I also try and pick their brains as much as I can.

"I’ve spent a good amount of time with Mala (Dawid Malan) this season, and as a cricketing brain he is just unbelievable, so I’ve spent time with him, picking his brain and just learning as quickly as I can.”

Chohan believes that he will add something different to a tour in which Jos Buttler returns as captain after injury, and to which England will add two players from the Pakistan Test tour once the third Test starts in Rawalpindi on October 24.

“My skillset is a very unique one and a bit different to what England has had before,” he said.

“I feel very confident in my game and I like to express myself as a person with how I bowl and I think that works to my strength.

“Being in this new environment will be a really good opportunity to thrive.”

On Wednesday night, Sanjay Patel, the interim Yorkshire chief executive, paid tribute on the club’s behalf.

"We are delighted for the inclusion of Jafer and Adil in the England squad,” he said.

“It is very pleasing to see Jafer receive his first call-up, and he is a player with huge potential.

“And it’s great to see Adil included in the squad, to hopefully add to his number of caps.

“The club wishes them both well with England.”
