Yorkshire Leagues: Cranmer’s return helps spark revival

MICHAEL Cranmer, Hoylandswaine’s Australian all-rounder, continued the champions’ recent improvement after their nightmare start to the season.

Cranmer arrived back in this country on May 28 and has made a rapid impact. After taking 3-16 in the win over Marsden, he used his pace to grab 6-23 from 10 overs as hosts Scholes were bowled out for 62 and lost by eight wickets. Hoylandswaine needed just 12 overs to win, Amar Rashid carrying his bat for 40.

Shepley extended their lead to 10 points, Kirkburton climbing above Golcar into second place. Shepley were nine-wicket winners at Holmfirth, who were tied down by Danny Glover. He took 6-45 as Holmfirth crawled to 
103-7, a total that was overhauled in 15 overs.

Golcar suffered a two-wicket defeat at Honley where bowlers were on top. Harlon Haye and Ritchie Howarth troubled the Golcar batsmen, who were ousted for 136 in 37.2 overs after being 68-7.

Honley struggled to 83-6 before Danny Howard and Rob Moore got them back on course with a seventh-wicket stand of 37. The home side reached their target after 45 overs despite 4-48 from Danny Rhodes.

Kirkburton began the day just one point above Shelley but victory by 132 runs at Westerley Lane widened the gap to seven points.

Andrew Smith took the starring role with 103 and there were half-centuries from Jonathan Butterfield and Iqbal Khan. Gurman Randhawa played his part with six wickets.

There were two undefeated centuries at Barkisland where Delph & Dobcross won by seven wickets. Lorenzo Ingram made 124 not out for Barkisland and enjoyed a second-wicket stand of 177 with Jamie Summerscales, who hit 90. Faisal Butt struck 133 for Delph, he and Graeme Simpson building an unbroken partnership of 115.

Elland won at Skelmanthorpe by 59 runs, with Greg Finn piling up 92. Jack Hendy assisted with a half-century and four wickets.

Marsden paceman Chris Kilner had a 7-75 haul from 25 overs but his side lost by 64 runs at Hall Bower, for whom leg-spinner Yogesh Golwalkar took six wickets.

Hall overwhelm rivals after Castle cuts loose

Whitley Hall dominated their oldest rivals in the Premier Division, Elsecar, at Baxter Field.

Elsecar, winners of the top divison title more times than any other club, were sent packing for 145 after the hosts had amassed 320-4.

South African Jaco Castle hammered 148, including 22 boundaries, and starred in a fourth-wicket partnership of 194 with Alex Fletcher, who included 14 boundaries in his knock of 94. Jim Tasker chipped in with 44 and took 3-40 and James Ahmed claimed 4-14.

Treeton, last season’s secton winners, were dismissed for 156 after hosts Hallam had closed on 168-9, Humphrey Emery putting in a claim for all-rounder of the division with a knock of 49 and a spell of 4-36.

Norton Oakes had four wickets left after passing Houghton Main’s 170, in which Adam Cutmore hit 59. John Ledger and Danny Owen shared the Haugh wickets, and the guests fired back with 171-6, Andy Firth making 56, Alex Hughes 41 and Luke Sage 30 not out.

Rob Barlow had a fine match for Wath, at home to Aston Hall, hitting a half-century and grabbing 3-49 as Aston closed on 
182-9, chasing 195-8. Derek Mitchell made 42 for the winners, while Hall’s best were Uznam Azeem, with 54 and 3-33, Amir Riaz with 48 and Josh Coulson with 4-60.

Whiston did well to take a maximum at Wickersley, opener Andy Tomlinson cracking 43 against his former team-mates, out of 168-8. Khurran Javeed and Shahid Hussain each bagged three cheap wickets for Wickersley, who folded for 139, teenager Jordan Bethel hitting 43 as Sufyen Sayed captured 5-12.

In Division One, Conisbrough made 305-9 at Norton Woodseats, No 5 Gary Strephan making 191, including 30 boundaries.

Woodseats closed on 199, Shahzad Hussian reaching 70.

Bradfield batted strongly to make 254-6, Tom Coulson scoring 80 and Paul Garnett 52 before toppling hosts Darfield for 142, all-rounder Coulson picking up 5-36.

Shiregreen’s Asiam Hayat had the day’s best return, 8-30, as Rotherham Town B were all out for 94 in reply to 238-7, Hedar Rasool cracking 70.

Beckwithshaw are setting a hot pace

Yasar Ali hoisted a six to clinch Beckwithshaw’s decisive win over nearest rivals Burley and send a ‘catch us if you can’ message to the rest of the league.

With eight games gone, Beckwithshaw are the only unbeaten side in the league and already have a 14-point advantage.

Oliver Hotchkiss (5-17) and 
Istikhar Hussain (4-11) tore through the previously solid Burley batting for just 100 before Ross Sedgley struck 55 not out and Ali smashed the winning hit.

Collingham look threatening after John Swain (70) and Toby Jacklin (68no) steered them past Harden’s 196-6 in which Andrew Wear and Jason Roper hit half-centuries.

Four wickets each for Jos Siddall and Jack Mills helped bowl out Follifoot as Kirkstall won the battle of the bottom sides despite the efforts of Mark Richards (5-19).

Odge Davey (37no) and Paul Cannings (55no) saw Bilton to victory after Chris Winn (5-42) 
restricted Guiseley to 144.

Josh Inglis hit a half-century for Pool but Charlie Swallow (64no) and Laurie O’Connor (42no) eased Ben Rhydding to victory.

Division Two leaders Knaresborough went down to their first defeat at Thackley, who set a 
279-5 target with Majid Khan (87), Chris Luxton (57) and Yasser Ali (56) leading the way.

The visitors looked to have salvaged a draw thanks to a half-century seventh-wicket stand between Sam Ryan and Jonathan Corcoran, but Thackley struck three times in the final seven balls to take full points.

Bolton Villas moved out of the bottom two after half-centuries from Lee Margerison and Andrew Clarke and a 5-85 spell from Sam Lawrence saw them past Bardsey.

Jamie Chapman (76no) and Alastair Long (80no) helped struggling Calverley to a season’s best 228 and on their way to a surprise four points against third-placed North Leeds.

Openers Sam Smith (101) and Stewart Smith (57) put on 155 and James Davies took 6-46 as Otley defeated Steeton for whom Paul Hardwick picked up 6-52.

A century from Jonathan Hughes was the highlight as Ilkley took four points at Adel.
