Yorkshire leagues: Round-up for weekend of July 4-5

Yorkshire ECB

Danial Rafiq fired Barnsley to the top of the table with a sparkling century as they chased down Sheffield Collegiate’s 278-9 with four wickets in hand.

That took them above Rotherham Town who crashed to defeat at Yorkshire Academy while York made up some ground with a win at Castleford.

Tom Dunn (79) and Will Root (71) led the way for Collegiate, but Jonathan Trower (47) got Barnsley off to a good start and Rafiq cut loose, reaching his 50 and his hundred with two of his nine sixes in his 56-ball 106. Collegiate used eight bowlers but Barnsley got home in 44.3 overs.

Eliot Callis (68) was top scorer in the Academy’s 203-9 but it appeared insufficient as Mark Cummins (46) and Gareth Purshouse (44) put on 90 for Rotherham’s second wicket.

However, tight bowling from Jared Warner (3-29) and James Logan (4-32) saw the visitors collapse from 111-1 to 153 all out.

Simon Lambert picked up 3-6 in a four-over spell as Castleford were dismissed for 119. Adam Whatley (57) helped York get over the line with three wickets left.

Jamie Hopper (4-46), Nick Hardgrave (3-42) and 14-year-old Alec Drury (3-37) restricted Hull to 147 despite the efforts of Andy Simpson (63). Driffield always looked comfortable and Ali Asad (78no) saw them home with help from Danny Broumpton (24) and Hardgrave (23no).

Lesroy Weekes (4-20) was the chief tormentor of Cleethorpes, but batting was not much easier for Sheffield United, who recovered from 34-4 to win by three wickets, thanks to Daniel McLean (25no).

Felix Odell (5-40) and Luke Townsend (3-50) restricted Appleby Frodingham to 172, but three cheap wickets each for Jack Forrester and Kieran Watson helped dismiss Doncaster for 109.

Bradford

PUDSEY ST LAWRENCE’S hopes of a first league title for 24 years suffered another setback when they went down to a one-wicket loss to second-placed Woodlands.

It was their second-successive defeat and their lead has been reduced to 14 points.

St Lawrence were restricted to 176-9 with only Adam Waite (72) able to make an impact as teenage pace bowler Elliot Richardson took 4-52.

Woodlands were wobbling at 107-6 in reply, but Logan Weston kept a cool head (54).

Gary Fellows (67) and Nick Connolly (66) shared a partnership of 134 as Hanging Heaton chased down New Farnley’s 274-5 to win by five wickets.

Champions Cleckheaton were struggling at 67-5 at Pudsey Congs before a sixth-wicket partnership of 118 from James Lee (72) and Tanzeel Altaf (50) and they totalled 210. James Pearson (4-50) and Joe Greaves (4-52) were Congs’ best bowlers.

Congs were dismissed for 115, their last four wickets falling for one run; opener Nick Lindley carried his bat for 53. Iain Wardlaw (4-42) and Altaf (3-37) ensured Cleckheaton’s 95-run win.

Lightcliffe beat Bradford & Bingley by two wickets with two balls to spare to lift themselves out of the relegation zone.

Captain Alex Stead (52) led the pursuit of Bradford & Bingley’s 202 which featured a knock of 73 from Noman Ali.

A week after beating leaders Pudsey St Lawrence, East Bierley suffered a seven-wicket loss to bottom-team Saltaire.

East Bierley were bowled out for 153. Saltaire eased to victory through Asif Ayub (47no) and Tariq Mehboob (41no).

Farsley made 221-4 amd the two-wicket loss to Undercliffe was tough on Greg Pickles (119no). Undercliffe reached their target with 13 balls to spare.

Central Yorkshire

ALL-ROUNDER Jack Hughes was Townville’s match-winnner as they kept alive their Premiership title hopes by avenging the previous week’s home defeat against Ossett.

Hughes (4-26) limited Ossett to 165 and then struck an unbeaten 73 off 78 balls as Townville eased to a seven-wicket victory.

Townville stay 10 points adrift of leaders Methley whose six-wicket win at Carlton was set up by Mustafa Bashir (3-15), Ed Walmsley (2-19) and Luke Patel (2-8).

Third-placed Wakefield Thornes coasted to their fifth straight league win, crushing Birstall for the second successive week. Saif Ur-Rehman (14) was the only batsman who reached double figures as Faisal Irfan 
(6-25) and Ravindra Paliyaguruge (2-1) skittled Birstall for 52.

Muhammed Shahnawaz (4-48) and Sardar Khan (3-12) toppled Hunslet Nelson for 115, replying to Batley’s 142 that featured 78 by Ayaz Seedat.

Terence James (81) and David Blakeley (76) led Mirfield Parish Cavaliers to 255-7 against bottom team Altofts who were bowled out for 100 by Tom Fretwell (5-24) and Nazar Hussain (3-15).

Jordan Sleighthome claimed 5-25 and hit 71 in a 124-run partnership with Darryl Hendricks (88no) as Wrenthorpe beat Buttershaw St Paul’s by eight wickets.

In the Championship, Wakefield St Michael enjoyed a last-over win in a high-scoring game against leaders Hopton Mills.

James Cooper smashed seven sixes in a rapid 91 as St Michael’s overhauled Hopton’s 294-7 that featured 156 by Neil Browne.

Paul Sackley hit a century in Liversedge’s five-wicket win against East Ardsley while Shakeel Mahmood (52) shared a crucial eighth-wicket stand of 84 with Dewsbury Rams’ head coach Glenn Morrison (25) as Northowram Fields beat Oulton by one wicket.

Huddersfield

FIFTEEN-year-old leg spinner Siraj Sajid produced the Premiership’s outstanding bowling performance of the day as Elland improved their chances of avoiding relegation by beating bottom side Skelmanthorpe.

Sajid snapped up 7-35 from 10.1 overs as Skelmanthorpe collapsed from 130-2 to 183 all out.

Michael Midwood (35no) and Alistair Finn (19no) shared an unbroken eighth wicket stand of 34 as Elland knocked off the runs.

Joe Carter hit 77 as Scholes retained a seven-point lead over Hoylandswaine with a 21-run win at Delph and Dobcross.

Sarjinder Pal Singh struck 59 and Kesrick Williams bagged four wickets in champions Hoylandswaine’s three-wicket victory at Broad Oak.

Luke Bridges (94) and Tim Seifert (47) shared a 90-run partnership as Barkisland overhauled Shelley’s 214 that featured 97 by Ibrar Younas while Moorlands’ Darrell Sykes (4-24), Andrew Walker (4-29) and Chris Lloyd (2-9) routed Kirkburton for 73 but Craig Fletcher (5-21) sent Moorlands collapsing to 57 all out.

Steve Whitwam (44no) guided Golcar to a nine-wicket win against Slaithwaite who were toppled for 89 by Tim Welsford (5-44) and Will Hinchliffe (4-30)

Muztuza Hussain (45no and 4-56) and Liam Wiles (53) were Championship leaders Cawthorne’s match-winners as they beat Armitage Bridge by one wicket.

Darren Hinchliffe (50) and sons Chris (42) and Jack (5-11) shone in Meltham’s 224-run win over third-placed Clayton West.

Thongsbridge won by eight wickets at Almondbury who were skittled for 29 by Zafar Iqbal (6-12) and Jamie Hayes (4-15).

All-rounder Bilal Khiljee’s 5-38 and 69 was in vain for Holmfirth who collapsed from 120-1 to 188 all out, chasing Kirkheaton’s 191.

Sykes Cup

Premiership leaders Scholes stayed on course for a league and cup double by beating Moorlands by three wickets in yesterday’s Sykes Cup semi-final.

All-rounder Tom Brook was Scholes’s match-winner.

He snapped up 5-7 in a 10-over spell that featured six maidens as Moorlands were reduced to 42-8.

Australian Chris Lloyd (38) and Andrew Walker (33) led a fightback by putting on 59 for the ninth wicket as Moorlands finished on 122.

After an hour lost because of rain, Scholes overhauled the target in 46 overs, with Tom Boorman hitting 34 and Tom Brook finishing unbeaten on 44.

Moorlands’ Darrell Sykes claimed 3-25 from 10 overs and Walker had figures of 1-9 from his 10-over spell which included six maidens.

Kirkburton host Barkisland in the second semi-final next Sunday.

The final is at Elland on August 9.

South Yorkshire

TOP of the league Whitley Hall, playing Hallam, third from bottom, collapsed to 79-6 (Matt Newman 4-33), then recovered to 
200-9 (Greig Batty 61, Sam Chatterton 60).

But Alex Hughes batted through for a determined innings of 94 to steer Hallam to a three-wicket win.

Treeton were playing Elsecar, whose return to form caught Treeton without Steve Foster, Scott Cunningham and Chris Cobb, and they cleaned up.

Jason Meadows scored 120 out in a total of 242-6 and Scott Jones took 6-36 as Treeton stuttered to 190-9.

An equally unexpected result saw Houghton Main, with 226-9 (Tahir Nawas 77), beat Wickersley 184 (Richard Harrison 66).

Junior Callum Honeyman took 3-36 in 13 overs.

Coal Aston got their second win of the season beating former league leaders Darfield, who were held to 197-7 (Tabassum Bhatti 58, Michael Topp 51no). Coal Aston, led by Simon Mintoft (50) won by one wicket.

Wath scored 255-9 (Harvey Wootton 76) to get within 18 of Conisbrough’s 273-8 (Nathan Smith 83, Jonathan Phillips 68).

So the key result proved to be that of Tickhill v Aston Hall, both teams on the same points and tucked in behind Whitley and Treeton ahead of play, and both with the chance of going to the top with a clear win.

Tickhill scored 232, mainly thanks to Andrew Rennison’s fine 120.

Aston’s reply saw Steve Reid take three early wickets. After Nick Smit (76) and Amar Riaz (53), they needed 22 to win off the last three over but Reid tore back, taking two in the last over and Aston were held at 226-9.

So Tickhill are now one point behind Whitley and two ahead of Treeton with 10 games to go.

Aire Wharfe

Lee Gordon hit a towering six off the last available ball to give Kirkstall a four-wicket win over Collingham and keep them in the title race.

A century stand between Jack Harrison (72) and Jonny Haslem (64) helped Collingham to 279 but Kirkstall responded with Baber Butt (100), Andy Siddall (45) and Matt Webb (45) keeping them up with the asking rate. They still needed eight off Toby Jacklin’s final over and five off the last ball, with Gordon obliging

Leaders Otley made short work of Bilton despite the efforts of Vic Craven, whose 42 was exactly half his side’s total.

With Otley having no chance to chase batting bonus points, Beckwithshaw narrowed the gap at the top by taking maximum points against Guisley. Ben Quick (89) and Yasar Ali (68) starred in their 255 and Harry Lister picked up 4-5 in a 4.3-over spell as the home side were dismissed for 83.

Six Follifoot’s 226-8 was far too good for Ilkley who were bowled out for 176, Alex Fox taking 4-59.

Lewis Morgan and James Frost picked up three wickets each as North Leeds were tumbled out for 102. Burley struggled to 53-5 but Nick Brook (25no) and Muhammad Ullah (21no) kept their nerve to clinch the win.

Steeton and Rawdon came close to repeating their opening-day tie. Stephen Pearson took 4-38 as Rawdon made 148 and when he and last-pair partner Josh Gill came together, they needed 22 to win. They just got across the line despite the efforts of Andrew Doidge (3-34) and George Myers (5-48).

Jake Zslinszky (79), Tosh Baker (73) and Sam Wilson (5-29) were the stars of Pool’s 189-run win over Adel that keeps them hot on the heels of Division Two leaders Horsforth and Colton, both of whom had comfortable victories.

Heavy Woollen Cup

Holders Pudsey Congs visit Woodlands in the Heavy Woollen Cup semi-finals after beating Gomersal by 37 runs yesterday.

Callum Geldart hit 61 and put on 90 for the fourth wicket with Adam Patel (28) as Congs posted 257-9.

Gomersal’s reply was in deep trouble when Mustafa Rafique (2-27) reduced them to 12-3 but Jonathan Boynton and Jordan Bloom (41) led a superb fightback by putting on 141 for the fourth wicket.

Boynton hammered three sixes and 13 fours in a magnificent 118 off 138 balls and Joshua Fell chipped in with 20 but their efforts were in vain as Gomersal were bowled out for 220.

Congs’ Glenn Roberts claimed 4-50.

In the other semi-final, last season’s beaten finalists Townville host Hoylandswaine who won a high-scoring all-Huddersfield League quarter-final against Kirkburton.

Javaid Ahmad (88), Iqbal Khan (55), Jonathan Butterfield (40) and Asif Hussain (34) steered Kirkburton to 307.

Hoylandswaine knocked off the runs impressively, with Sarjinder Pal Singh smashing an unbeaten century off 117 balls, clinching victory with a six.

Singh put on 120 for the second wicket with Gharib Nawaz (87) and shared an unbroken 161-run stand with Ryan Robinson whose unbeaten 71 came off 76 deliveries.

York & District

SCARBOROUGH strengthened their lead at the top of the Premier Division with a thrilling five-run victory over Woodhouse Grange at North Marine Road.

Darren Harland (52) and Jack Holt (31) provided the majority of the hosts’ total of 164 all out as David Suddaby took 4-58 and Josh Jackson 3-18. In reply Chris Bilton made 65 but Theo Smith (4-29) and Ryan Gibson (3-43) ensured the leaders won.

Sheriff Hutton Bridge were convincing winners at York II, despite the efforts of Richard Brown (42). Louis Foxton made 48 and Robert Pinder an unbeaten half-century.

Acomb won by 20 runs in a low scoring match at home to Heworth.

Stamford Bridge inflicted a sixth defeat in seven matches on Studley Royal, while Dunnington beat Easingwold by six wickets, Martyn Piercy and Kyle Waite both scoring half-centuries for the visitors. Jake Murphy took 3-46 and scored 34.

Clifton Alliance’s Joe Ashdown (110) scored his third century of the campaign which came in response to Paul Scrowston’s 97 as visitors Fenner took the majority of the points in a draw.

Jack Storey (124) was the day’s other centurion, he and Guy Martinson (72) helping Hull Zingari to a match-winning total of 288-6 against Beverley Town.

Sessay’s march towards the Division One title continues with nine of 11 matches won.

Joseph Watson (92no) top scored for them as they posted 311-8 at Beverley Town II. Michael Cooke top scored for the home side but Liam Carver (4-30) and Stephen Langstaff (3-45) kept the match under control, dismissing the hosts for 167.
