Two-time Crucible champion Mark Williams faces the qualifying rounds of the Dafabet World Championship next week and admits he’d hate to miss out for the first time since 1997.

The Welshman lifted the famous trophy in 2000 and 2003 and has won 18 ranking titles in all, but has dropped out of the world’s top 16 this season so has to win one qualifying match at Ponds Forge Sports Centre, which run from Tuesday, April 8 until April 16.

“I haven’t had to qualify many times in the past, but I’ve got to do it now,” said 39-year-old Williams.

“It’s not nice but I just have to get on with it. I don’t want to finish the season sitting at home rather than being at the Crucible.

“There’s a lot of pressure on everyone in that final qualifying round.”

Williams was out of the top 16 in 2009 but came through the qualifying round. He has been ever-present at the Crucible since 1997.

“That’s a good record and it would be nice to keep it going,” he added.
