Dettori's decision pays dividends

FRANKIE DETTORI was flying high after Wings Of Desire galloped into Epsom Derby contention by winning a compelling renewal York's Betfred Dante Stakes.

The effervescent rider performed his trademark flying dismount after timing his winning run to perfection on the John Gosden-trained colt, who only made a racecourse debut four weeks ago.

Dettori’s fourth winner on Knavesmire this week, this success came 24 hours after So Mi Dar – owned by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber – won the tattersalls Musidora Stakes for fillies.

He could not hide his pleasure after proving the doubters wrong – many thought the Italian should have ridden the Gosden-trained Foundation, who had the better form but finished third.

“I knew this horse could be anything and we proved it,” said the winning jockey who believes Wings Of Desire can replicate the Dante and Epsom Derby double completed by Golden Horn 12 months ago.
