Throughout the close season, much was made of what the Reds had not got up front - following the exits of Cauley Woodrow and Carlton Morris in particular - as opposed to what they have.

Cole was rarely mentioned in dispatches, in truth, following an underwhelming 2021-22 campaign. Although he was far from alone. But his excellent recent form, culminating in his opener at Sheffield Wednesday, is making people take note again.

And more especially Duff, with the sheer weight of Cole's performances starting to earn his respect and trust.

Duff said: "Devante has shown a willingness to learn, as all of them have.

"We are asking him to do slightly different things and we have had a few good conversations with him. He had a difficult season last year. He has now scored a few goals and his performances have been very good and that's the reason he has been staying on the pitch. It's not an accident.

"It is what we have been seeing as staff and we have been seeing a go-to man. Earlier in the season, it was not so much, but he's been good (since)."The main thing is it is not just a willingness to run, but a willingness to learn and those are the two things we are after from all the players."For his part, Cole is enjoying working with Duff.

"He (Duff) has been positive, a big change from last year and he's been good for everyone here,” said Cole. “If we can bring energy to every league game, we won't be far away at all."

Uplifting performances and results are helping along the way and the Reds head into Saturday's game against high-flying Portsmouth on the back of two morale-boosting afternoons at two sides firmly expected to be in the League One promotion shake-up in Wednesday and Ipswich Town.Cole added: "As a player, you always want to start games and you have got to carry on playing well.

"It was difficult for everyone last year with the two managers. It was in and out for most people. But now (for me) it is about playing regular football and hopefully carrying on."
