The Halifax-born player underwent a medical in the Potteries on Tuesday ahead of putting the finishing touches to his switch to Michael O'Neil's side on Wednesday morning. He joins for an undisclosed fee.

Several clubs were interested in the 22-year-old, but Stoke have won the race to sign him.

A statement from Barnsley read: "Monies received upfront will be immediately reinvested into the team, as Gerhard (Struber) and his squad set out on another Sky Bet Championship campaign.

"Barnsley Football Club would like to deeply thank Jacob for his efforts whilst at Oakwell and wish him well in his future career.

The forward made 82 appearances in all competitions, scoring 12 goals and provides versatility across the frontline.

Last week, Reds head coach Struber revealed that there was interest in several of his leading players and said that he faced 'a big fight' to keep them.

Alex Mowatt, still in talks regarding a new deal, has attracted interest alongside last season's top-scorer Cauley Woodrow.

On the incoming front, the Reds are hoping to bring in several new signings, with a deal to sign Polish centre-half Michal Helik from Cravocia set to be completed shortly.

Struber, speaking last Thursday, said: "We have players who are interesting other clubs.

“The project is to make the next step interesting for many players here. The relationship with the players is on a very good level and this is helpful.

“But I am not stupid and I understand when players get big offers and we have, for one or two players, the situation that we fight for them to stay here. It is not easy and it is a big fight."

Brown follows John Obi Mikel, Morgan Fox, Steven Fletcher and James Chester in joining Stoke during this window. Former Reds players Adam Davies and Liam Lindsay are also at the club.

O’Neill said: “Jacob is a player with a great deal of potential and he is genuinely excited about continuing his development with us.

“He has been a consistent performer for Barnsley and he will certainly bring a different dimension to our squad.”
