Barnsley FC’s Oakwell stadium, old-school rustic charm

When it comes to famous old grounds in Yorkshire, Barnsley Football Club’s Oakwell Stadium stands as one of the county’s most famous and most evocative.

Built in 1887 and opened in 1888, it has gone through many facelifts during its 133-year lifespan but retains all of its rustic charm.

Indeed, the outdoor gentlemen’s toilet was only replaced in the last two years by a brand new media facility.

Situated in a little valley, the floodlights and stands can be seen on almost all roads that lead into the South Yorkshire town, making the stadium a beacon for the community.

Oakwell has seen some famous days in the club’s history - Barnsley’s run to their one and only FA Cup triumph in 1912, one season of Premier League football in 1996-97 and some last-minute drama with winning goals by the beloved Reds.

In the latest series in The Yorkshire Post, cartoonist Graeme Bandeira brings Oakwell to life.
