Davies 7 - Kept out Billy Sharp with a fine reflex save a few minutes before opening goal. Also did well to keep out Brooks and O’Connell after the break.

Hide AdMcCarthy 5 - Left exposed early on by Blades swift attacking down his flank. Booked and substituted at half-time.
Jackson 6 - Battled hard throughout. Was left with a difficult job on his hands after MacDonald's dismissal.
MacDonald 5 - Great clearing header at back post to deny Chris Basham from an early corner but saw red three minutes before the break following a clash with Leon Clarke. Stupidly aimed a head-butt at the Blades man.
Pearson 6 - Had a few neat touches and kept going but struggled to make much headway. Booked.

Hide AdJ Williams 6 - Found life hard against a Blades midfield who always looked the more polished on the ball.
Hammill 6 - Needed to help out more defensively when McCarthy was being beaten too easily early on. Couple of attacking flashes in the second half but lacked usual quality.
Potts 6 - Headed decent chance over from a corner just after the hour mark. He also had shot blocked moments later.
Moncur 5 - Started the game brightly but soon faded, his final pass often failing to find its target. Substituted at half-time.

Hide AdHedges 6 - Kept going but but struggled to make much of an impact as the Blades defence stood firm.
Bradshaw 5 - Had to feed on scraps on an afternoon when Barnsley’s final ball just wasn’t good enough. Substituted.
Substitutes
Pinnock (for Moncur 46) 6 - Stuck doggedly to his task as part of a three-man defence, his anticipation helping prevent a couple of United breakaways.
Ugbo (for McCarthy 46) 6 - Should have laid off ball to a team-mate when found with back to goal in stoppage time but tried to shoot himself and was crowded out.
Thiam (for Bradshaw 79) 6 -Tricky feet almost created a late chance for Barnsley but the home defence got back.
