BARNSLEY winger Dale Jennings has left the club after having his contract at Oakwell terminated by mutual consent.

The former Bayern Munich player, signed amid considerable fanfare for a six-figure fee of around £250,000 from the German giants in the summer of 2013, has had a disappointing two seasons at Oakwell, which was blighted by injury and fitness issues.

Jennings had a year left on his Reds deal, but the club and the 22-year-old have now elected for a clean break, with the Liverpudlian now heading onto pastures new.

Jennings’ last game for the Reds was in the 2-0 derby loss to Sheffield United on Easter Saturday.

Towards the end of last season, Barnsley head coach Lee Johnson spoke about Jennings having a future at the club if he improve sort his fitness levels.

Speaking in April, Johnson said: “There’s no doubt he’s a good player. But it is the fitness levels, really.

“You can’t play for me if you can’t run. I am not saying he can’t run, but at the moment, he’s got to do a little bit more.

“It is not his fault because at the moment he is showing a really good attitude and trying hard.

“But it is just a case of how quick it takes to recover as my game is about the transition when you win the ball back quickly in the opposition half.

“If you need time to recover, lungs-wise, you can’t do that.”

Barnsley have already signed two players so far this close season, including Inverness winger Marley Watkins.

Former Halifax captain Marc Roberts has also joined the Reds, with defender Lewin Nyatanga also agreeing a new two-year deal late last week.
