Under Valerien Ismael it is scaling new heights and the Reds head coach believes that his on-pitch leader – approaching his peak years as a professional – is capable of achieving even more.

The devout hope of all Barnsley followers is that it will be in the colours of the Reds under the command of the Frenchman going forward, but it remains a huge if with the Doncaster-born player out of contract this summer and having not yet signed a new deal.

But one thing for is certain, there is more to come for him.

Ismael said: “He has improved his own performance and I think he has not reached his highest level and has more possibility to grow in this situation. He knows it and gives everything in every game to develop and improve and raise his own bar to reach the next level Alex is a big example to all the young guys.”

Alongside his obvious qualities on the ball, Ismael is also quick to pay tribute to the leadership credentials which are being displayed by the 26-year-old.

He continued: “It is really important. Alex is a special player for me as a captain on the pitch as he understands everything and knows all the principles and believes in them.

“Now, I think he has made the next step in his development because he is really communicating with the guys and is giving confidence to them.

“It is important for me to have him as he takes a part of my job onto the pitch with the guys.

“At the moment, it is ok because we don’t have the fans.

“But normally, will all the guys, it is difficult to reach the fans and you need the guys on the pitch who will take the responsibility to show the principles of our game all the time and control everything. Alex is brilliant with his task.”
