Figures familiar with fans of Middlesbrough and Rotherham United are among the favourites to become Blackburn Rovers’ next manager.
Michael O’Neill ended the campaign at the Ewood Park helm, guiding Rovers to Championship safety after the end of Valerien Ismael’s reign.
He remained manager of the Northern Ireland national team when he took the reins, doing double duty in the final months of the season. However, he has now left Blackburn to focus solely on his duties on the international scene.
Blackburn’s chief operating officer Suhail Shaikh added: “We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Michael for his contribution, professionalism and commitment during his time with the club.
“Michael’s experience and leadership have been highly valued by everyone at Blackburn Rovers. Whilst we are naturally disappointed that he will not be continuing on a permanent basis, we fully respect his decision to focus on his long-term ambitions with Northern Ireland. On behalf of the owners, board, staff and supporters, we wish Michael every success for the future.”
