Bradford City 2 Gillingham 2: Charlie Wyke's instant impact delights Stuart McCall

BRADFORD CITY manager Stuart McCall believes Charlie Wyke's debut goal will give the deadline-day signing a confidence boost.

Wyke made an instant impact with a goal in the draw with Gillingham. Josh Wright had fired the visitors into a 14th-minute lead, but City hit straight back when Mark Marshall’s cross was headed in by the striker.

“You always want to hit the ground running when you come as a striker,” said Bantams chief McCall.

“It was a fantastic ball from Marshall. As soon as he knocked it in, I just thought ‘get on the end of that Charlie’ and he did. It was a great header.

“It’s a good debut for him and will give him a lot of confidence.”

Bradford took control and took a lead into half-time, with Wyke involved. He drew a foul on the edge of the area and, after Billy Clarke’s free-kick was tipped on to a post by Stuart Nelson, Tony McMahon reacted quickest and slotted home the rebound.

City were denied the three points when Deji Oshilaja struck early in the second half, with Wyke denied a winner when his header was cleared off the line by Rory Donnelly.

McCall had no complaints. “I think Gillingham got what they came for. Fair play to them, they defended really well.

“We’re disappointed with a point but if we keep producing performances like that we’re confident of finishing the season strong. We take a point and who knows? That might be a good point at the end of the season.”
