The Iron took the lead in the first half when Gary McSheffrey converted Hakeeb Adelakun’s cross on 26 minutes.

But City, for the second away running, hit back on the restart to claim a share of the spoils, with Clarke, who struck a late leveller at Bramall Lane on Saturday, volleying home on 63 minutes.

Ex-Sheffield United and Middlesbrough defender Tony McMahon had a chance to win it for the visitors late on, but fired over.

Recoveries at Iron and the Blades have at least shown City’s spirit after a 6-0 humiliation at home to Bristol City, with the latest point moving them up to tenth place with 59 points, the amount they managed last term with two matches to go starting with Saturday’s home derby with Barnsley..

But off the field, the club’s future remains up in the air with Gianni Paladini continuing talks this week with the Valley Parade hierarchy with a view to a possible takeover.

On Clarke’s leveller, manager Phil Parkinson said: “He made it look easy.

“I thought it was a good finish. One chance, one goal – that’s terrific from him.

“We started well, but then they got the goal and we were second best up to half-time. We lost our way and gave them a lift.

“It was so flat – Scunthorpe were flat and the way they started, we looked the most likely team.

“But McSheffrey got that one big moment and got the goal. That’s what you need from your key players and fortunately Billy’s produced that for us.”
