Figures familiar with fans of Barnsley, Leeds United and Huddersfield Town are among the favourites to become Burnley’s next boss.
The Clarets have made a dismal start to the Championship season following their relegation from the Premier League last term.
They handed the reins to Nicky Hayen in the aftermath of their relegation but the Belgian has overseen a plunge into the bottom three.
A 4-1 defeat to Lincoln City at the weekend proved to be the final straw and he was relieved of his duties with Burnley languishing in 22nd. As it stands, only Preston North End and Derby County are below the Clarets.
In a statement, the club said: “Burnley Football Club has dismissed head coach Nicky Hayen with immediate effect. The board has taken the decision following a disappointing start to the Championship season.”
