Carlos Corberan explains why Ben Hamer left Huddersfield Town

CARLOS CORBERAN has revealed that Ben Hamer's departure from Huddersfield Town last week was down to the goalkeeper's desire for more game time and his faith in Ryan Schofield.

Hamer, who joined Swansea City on Friday, left the Terriers despite starting the campaign as the club's number one custodian.

However, in recent weeks the 33-year-old has deputised for Schofield, with the youngster starting in the Terriers' last six Championship outings.

"Schofield was playing well for us and so he continued playing," explained Corberan.

"The situation was that Ben wanted to leave the club because he wasn't agreed to the contract that the club offered to him and he wanted to leave.

"We understood that situation and we wanted to continue playing with Ryan. Ben gave us a lot of things, especially this year after I arrived at the club.

"He was our first goalkeeper at the beginning but then got injured. In that moment, we had the opportunity to play Ryan and he did really well and took advantage of this moment to be a part of the squad."

An error from Schofield contributed to Huddersfield's 2-0 defeat at Watford on Saturday but Corberan refused to pin the blame on his goalkeeper as Town lost for the third game in a row.

The 21-year-old was slow to react to a pass from Alex Vallejo as Tom Cleverly pounced to give the Hornets the lead with a sliding challenge before Joao Pedro doubled the lead 10 minutes later.

“There is no doubt that Ryan Schofield is involved in the action, Alex Vallejo is also involved, but this is what it is like to play football," added Corberan.

“We need to keep our concentration in the key moments of the game. If you don’t have the right concentration in the moment, you don’t make the right decisions. You will suffer the consequences as any mistake is going to have a high impact.

“I do not expect him to apologise. I was talking to my players after the game like I always do. I try to help them in my way.

“Ryan has everything to play in the Championship, that is why he is our first goalkeeper right now. We started the game the way we wanted to play but the team didn’t create enough chances.

“The team did completely well until we gave one goal to them. After we gave this present to them it was impossible for us to win the game but the team did not give up.”

Huddersfield will seek a return to winning ways as they host Millwall on Wednesday evening.
