Chile down Australia

Chile hold off a spirited comeback from Australia to get off to a winning start in Group B, eventually triumphing 3-1.

Sanchez Alexis’s cool finish gave Chile a 12th-minute lead and when Jorge Valdivia blasted a second two minutes later Australia appeared up against it.

But former Everton stalwart Tim Cahill rose to head his side back into the game 10 minutes before the break.

Australia suffered the occasional scare at the back in the second half, but they took the game to Chile for the most part and several times went close to an equaliser.

Chile held firm and cemented their win with a third goal, in stoppage time, from Jean Beausejour to take second place behind Holland, 5-1 winners over Spain in the group’s opening game.
