The Terriers, who return to action on Saturday with a Roses game with visiting Wigan Athletic, have held positive talks with the parent clubs of their quintet of loan players, whose deals currently expire at the end of June.

Earlier this month, experienced midfielder Andy King - on loan from Leicester City - signed a new deal committing him to the club for the remainder of 2019-20.

Meanwhile, Danny Simpson and Colin Quaner are out of contract at the end of this month and the club must also decide whether to trigger the club option of 12-month extensions for Elias Kachunga, Ryan Schofield, Joel Coleman, Demeaco Duhaney and Jon Gorenc Stankovic.

Cowley has maintained regular contact with all players whose deals end and acknowledges it is a different time.

But he is hopeful that his squad will remain intact for the rest of the season.

He said: "We are in a good place with all of our loan players and are just trying to finalise our last one or two prior to Saturday if we can and with the boys we have got out of contract, we are not able to make any decisions about next season for those players at the moment.

"But we are in a good place to extend all their contracts to hopefully finish this season.

"It is a really tough time for everyone in football. I try to look at it from everyone's perspective. It has been such a challenge for the club and all clubs - not just in the Championship.

"There's so much uncertainty not knowing when next season will start and whether we will finish this season and when supporters will be allowed back into the stadium and to what capacity.

"This has created an awful lot of uncertainty for clubs and players out of contract. I feel really for them as there's such a lack of certainty. It's the uncertainty which naturally creates the anxiety.

"We have tried to just be as clear as we can with the players wherever possible and even if it is not good news, we have tried to have the conversations and give them the explanations."

Town will pick from a strong squad for their opener with Wigan, but they will be without defenders Tommy Elphick (knee ligaments) and Jaden Brown, who recently returned to training after a bout of appendicitis.
