And things got worse for the hosts when Leitch-Smith pounced for a second goal on 65 minutes.

Cedric Evina pulled a goal back for Rovers with two minutes remaining, but it was a mere consolation.

Defeat left boss Darren Ferguson fuming.

“We didn’t deserve anything else, we were way off,” he said.

“Tonight we were quite honestly awful, on and off the ball.

“It was a soft goal we conceded but in all honesty we didn’t deserve anything out of the game even though we got the late goal.

“There were certain things that happened, we didn’t react well to them going ahead, we defended far too deep and didn’t stick to the game plan.

“We were trying to force things, we played as if we had to score in that first half. We have to be a bit more patient.

“It’s frustrating, this is what you get in League One football. You have to accept that the level of consistency will drop from time to time but we have to be relentless. It will catch up with you, you can’t keep going behind and expect to get anything out of the game.”
