Youngster Liam Mandeville brought Rovers back into the contest with 10 minutes to go, but the hosts failed to find an equaliser.

Rovers boss Ferguson said: “We are giving games we shouldn’t be losing away, I don’t think my goalkeeper has had too much to do at all. We are giving too many sloppy goals away.

“Walsall have not had to work for either goal, it was too easy for them.

“With the opportunities we had in the first half, we needed to take them.

“We were the better team in the first half and we came back late in the game. But we are conceding too many sloppy goals.

“It is a feeling of deja vu and it has to stop. We have to get back to the consistency we were showing when we had real momentum about us.”

On teenager Mandeville, Ferguson added: “He did well when he came on, he’s done that a couple of times now.

“With kids, you get no fear and he wanted the ball. Middleton made a couple of mistakes, but at least he was brave.”
