Doncaster Rovers land ex-Middlesbrough and Huddersfield Town man James Husband after Blackpool exit

Doncaster Rovers confirm second signing of summer transfer window as familiar face recruited

Doncaster Rovers have re-signed defender James Husband - nearly 12 years after he last represented the club.

The left-back completed his footballing education with Rovers after joining from Leeds United’s academy and eventually moved into the senior set-up.

He made 73 appearances for the club at first-team level but joined Middlesbrough in July 2014 after relegation from the Championship.

Nearly 12 years after he last wore the red and white of Doncaster, Husband has returned to the club as a free agent after being released by fellow League One outfit Blackpool.

Doncaster Rovers confirm James Husband signing

The 32-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year deal that will begin on July 1, following Republic of Ireland Under-21s winger Leon Ayinde through the door at the Eco-Power Stadium.

Husband said: "I was really young when I left. I owe this place a huge amount for my whole career and I just want to come back and repay that to the football club and all the fans.

“I'll give everything I've got, every single day, and try to make this club as successful as possible. This place holds a special place in my heart and I can't wait to get back out there."

Doncaster boss Grant McCann added: “He had a really good spell here before. He knows the football club and that's important, he knows the DNA of this club, he knows what it means to play for Doncaster Rovers. He was over the moon about coming back, returning to a club where he came through the academy and into the first team.”

James Husband’s career journey

Husband spent three years at Middlesbrough after leaving Doncaster, but managed just eight appearances for the club.

He was loaned to Fulham on two separate occasions and had a temporary stint at Huddersfield Town before departing the Riverside in 2017.

A move to Norwich City followed and he had loan spells at Fleetwood Town and Blackpool during his three years at Carrow Road. The latter signed him on a permanent basis in 2020 and he went on to take his Tangerines appearance tally to 238.
