Doncaster Rovers team news: One key player set for six weeks out as another returns

Doncaster Rovers are set to be without playmaker Harry Clifton for six weeks with a torn hamstring.

The 27-year-old has started six of Rovers' eight league One games this season and came off the bench in another, playing in the influential "No 10" position in the hole behind the centre-forward.

But he injured his hamstring in last week's 3-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic and is now set for a spell on the sidelines.

"It'll probably be the early part of November before Harry returns," confirmed the manager. "But the good thing is everybody else is fit. Gottys (Robbie Gotts) came through the week really well.

"(Joe) Sbara and Closey (Ben Close) and Zain Westbrook and people like that have had good minutes on Tuesday (In a behind-closed-doors friendly at Lincoln City) as well. Brilliant."

Either Sbara or Damola Ajayi could replace Clifton, or more orthodox midfielders such as Charlie Crew or Owen Bailey could be pushed further forward.

Clifton's injury is a blow, but Doncaster's squad depth means it is one they should be able to absorb, starting with Saturday's game at home to fellow promoted side Wimbledon.

"He tried to play on with it," said McCann. "And we could see that he couldn't get out of a sprint.

"It's disappointing news because I think Harry's important to how he wants to play and what he brings. But as I mentioned before, one door closes, another opens. Opportunity knocks for someone."

Right-back Jamie Sterry is also pushing for a start having backed up a Football league Trophy appearance with 60 minutes at Lincoln in his recovered from a fractured cheekbone and eye socket sustained against Exeter City on the opening weekend of the season.

Sterry played both games with a face mask his manager says the defender is now comfortable with.

"He's used to it now," said McCann. "He's played a couple of games.

"Last week was a little bit too soon for the Wigan game. That's why we left him out.

"But this week, he's had a really good week. So, he comes into consideration."
