Doncaster Rovers transfer news: Midfielder with eye for goal can take edge off Frankie Okoronkwo injury

Doncaster Rovers confounded expectations to sign attacking midfielder Elliott Lee on loan from Wrexham on deadline day.

Manager Grant McCann had indicated his business was done at the weekend but a deal that had been bubbling away all month finally came to fruition on the final day when he landed the ex-Barnsley player.

Like his father, former Newcastle United star Rob, Lee has an eye for scoring goals from midfield, contributing 40 goals in 150 appearances as Wrexham rose from non-league to the Championship play-off places in his time there.

“I’m really pleased," commented McCann. "We’ve been chasing Elliot all month and we had to be patient but we've got it done.

“Elliot is a top player at this level. He’s been instrumental in Wrexham’s rise up the divisions and the triple promotions, playing a huge part, scoring important goals.

“It's an excelling signing for the football club and he’ll bring plenty to us.”

Making Rovers more potent in front of goal was a big target for this transfer window, and they added centre-forward Frankie Okoronkwo on loan from Everton and brought back wide attacker Hakeeb Adelakun when he became a free agent.

Okoronkwo made a bright start, scoring against Wigan Athletic on his fourth appearance, only to injure his hamstring on his fifth.

Lee does not play in the same position as the 21-year-old, but he will take the edge off being without him for the next four weeks. Adelakun can play down the middle and 31-year-old Lee is comfortable on the left wing.

“There’s been a lot of talk over January and I've been in contact with a few clubs and spoke to a few managers but after speaking to the gaffer this is where I want to come and play football so I'm really excited," said Lee, who began his career at another of his dad's old club's, West Ham United, joining Barnsley when he left in 2016.

Between Barnsley and Wrexham he had a spell at Luton Town.
